Violence Erupts in Plateau Community, Many Injured, Houses Burnt

A violent clash in the Shimankar community, Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State, has left many injured and several houses burnt.

The unrest, which erupted on Monday, has thrown the community into turmoil as residents struggle to come to terms with the destruction.

What Sparked the Violence?

According to reports, the crisis began as a disagreement over traditional rites and rituals. A former senatorial candidate for Plateau South, Mr. Tobias Kwanmen, confirmed that the situation escalated when traditional worshippers attempted to perform a ritual in the community but were resisted by some Muslim groups.

The confrontation quickly spiraled into full-blown violence, leading to the burning of homes and businesses.

Authorities Respond, Call for Calm

Security forces were swiftly deployed to the scene to restore order, while local authorities, including councillors, are working to mediate peace. Plateau State’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, issued a statement expressing deep concern over the violence and urging residents to remain calm.
