Governor Idris Urges Military to Establish Base at Kebbi-Niger Border Amid Rising Attacks

Birnin Kebbi – In response to the increasing attacks by the Lakurawa terrorist group along the Nigeria-Niger border, Governor Nasir Idris has appealed to the Nigerian Defence Headquarters to set up a Military Operational Base (MOB) in the region.

The governor emphasized that the request was necessary due to the bandits’ new hit-and-run tactics, which have led to significant loss of lives and property in Arewa Local Government Area.

Governor Idris Calls for Urgent Military Action

Speaking at his residence in Birnin Kebbi after meeting with residents of Gesse II Housing, Idris revealed that he had contacted the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, urging immediate action to curb the growing insecurity.

“The bandits are attacking innocent villagers, killing dozens, destroying homes, and looting properties before fleeing to Sokoto State and Niger Republic. This situation demands a military base to counter their movements effectively,” Idris stated.

Enhanced Security Measures Underway

While acknowledging the ongoing efforts of the joint security task force, Idris stressed that the changing tactics of the criminals required additional personnel and advanced weaponry.

To support security operations, the governor announced the deployment of four additional Hilux vehicles to security forces, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

“The primary duty of any responsible government is to ensure the safety of its people. I remain fully dedicated to this mission—by all means and at all costs,” he affirmed.

Relief Efforts and Infrastructure Development

As part of the government’s response, an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp has been established to support those affected in Birnin Debe, Dan Marke, and Tambo villages.

Meanwhile, officials are assessing the damage and losses incurred due to the attacks.

During the meeting, Alhaji Muhammadu Dan’atto, leader of Gesse II residents, expressed gratitude to the governor for fulfilling his promise of installing streetlights and initiating road projects in their community.
