IPU Pledges Fair Hearing on Senator Natasha’s Suspension Appeal

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has assured embattled Kogi Central lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, that due process will be followed in reviewing the circumstances surrounding her suspension from the Nigerian Senate.

Natasha Appeals for Justice at IPU Meeting

During the Women in Parliament session at the ongoing IPU conference, Senator Natasha made a passionate appeal, seeking intervention from both the IPU and the United Nations (UN) over what she described as an unjust suspension.

Recounting her ordeal, she stated:

“On March 6, 2025, I was illegally suspended as a senator after submitting a petition against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, for sexual harassment.

Instead of allowing a fair and transparent investigation, I was silenced and stripped of my rights.”

She further detailed the consequences of her suspension, which included:

  • Withdrawal of security
  • Confiscation of official vehicles and entitlements
  • Termination of salary payments
  • A six-month restriction from appearing at the National Assembly

Senator Natasha described her suspension as a deliberate attempt to suppress women in leadership and a direct attack on democracy.

“If a female senator can be treated this way publicly, imagine what ordinary Nigerian women face daily in workplaces and universities,” she added.

IPU Responds: A Fair Review Will Be Conducted

Responding to her appeal, IPU President Tulia Ackson acknowledged Natasha’s concerns, stating that the IPU would take necessary steps after hearing both sides of the story.

“We have heard Senator Natasha’s concerns. However, as an institution, we will also listen to the other side before taking the necessary steps. This is in line with IPU’s customary practice of ensuring fairness in such matters,” Ackson stated.

She also noted that a Nigerian delegate at the session had sought to present a counter-narrative but was unable to speak due to time constraints.

Awaiting IPU’s Verdict

With the IPU promising to deliberate on the issue thoroughly, all eyes are now on the global parliamentary body to see how it will handle the case.
