Speaker Holds Peace Talks, Set to Withdraw Lawsuit
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims that Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, will be forced to resign as part of the resolution to the recent leadership crisis in the House.
This clarification comes after Obasa held a peace meeting on Tuesday with lawmakers, just a day after being re-elected as Speaker.
He also confirmed his intention to withdraw the lawsuit he filed challenging his removal.
Peace Talks and Leadership Changes
Obasa was reinstated as Speaker on Monday following the resignation of Mrs. Mosisili Meranda.
Reports had suggested that while Meranda stepped down to allow Obasa’s return, he too would resign within 48 hours to pave the way for a new Speaker from Lagos West, as demanded by 34 aggrieved lawmakers.
However, APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo refuted these speculations, stating that there was no agreement requiring Obasa to step down.
“To the best of my knowledge, there was no time the arrangement for Obasa to resign came up in the terms of settlement of the crisis,” Oladejo told reporters.
Obasa’s Next Moves
Amid ongoing efforts to restore unity, Obasa held a closed-door meeting on Tuesday with 39 lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Meranda.
The discussion, which started around 2:10 PM at the Assembly complex, aimed to mend relationships and align lawmakers on a common path forward.
A reliable source disclosed that Obasa is expected to formally withdraw his lawsuit against the House and 33 lawmakers at the Ikeja Court.
Additionally, the Lagos State House of Assembly is scheduled to resume its full sessions tomorrow.
