Afenifere Crisis: Group Disowns UK, US Members Over Oba Olaitan’s Leadership Dispute

Afenifere Faction Rejects UK, US Members Challenging Oba Olaitan’s Leadership

The leadership tussle within Afenifere, the renowned pan-Yoruba socio-political group, has taken a new twist as a faction has distanced itself from certain individuals claiming to represent the organization in the United Kingdom and the United States.

According to Afenifere, these individuals were expelled over two years ago and no longer have any authority to speak on behalf of the group.

Leadership Dispute Sparks Controversy

On Saturday, two groups claiming to be Afenifere’s UK and US chapters, led by Babatunde Shianaba (UK) and Dr. Durojaiye Akindutire (US), publicly rejected the appointment of Oba Oladipo Olaitan as the association’s leader.

However, in a swift response, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Justice Faloye, and Diaspora Secretary, Adebayo Adenekan, issued a statement denouncing the claims and reaffirming Oba Olaitan’s legitimacy.

Setting the Record Straight

“Afenifere has been made aware of a statement by some individuals falsely claiming to represent the group in the UK and the US,” the statement read.

“For clarity, the people behind this statement were expelled from Afenifere over two years ago and do not represent the group in any capacity.”

The organization also emphasized that its recognized leaders remain Prof. Sikiru Fadairo and Mr. David Adenekan in the US, and Mr. Seyi Adefisan and Prof. Seun Kolade in the UK.

Oba Olaitan’s Leadership Defended

Responding to criticism against its leader, Afenifere reaffirmed that Oba Olaitan’s appointment was well-deserved, highlighting his long-standing commitment to the organization.

“Oba Olaitan was officially named Deputy Leader by Pa Fasoranti more than three years ago and served with distinction under Pa Ayo Adebanjo,” the statement emphasized.

Public Urged to Ignore False Claims

Afenifere has urged the public to disregard any statements made by the expelled members, stating that their actions are purely motivated by personal interests and political maneuvering.

“Any statements signed by Dr. Durojaiye Akindutire and Babatunde Shianaba should be dismissed as baseless,” Afenifere warned.

Final Thoughts

The leadership crisis within Afenifere remains a heated topic, with power struggles shaping the group’s future.

While the UK and US chapters attempt to challenge the leadership of Oba Olaitan, the core Afenifere body insists on his legitimacy.
