A non-governmental organization, Centre for Gender Economic Initiative (CGE Africa), has called on survivors of sexual violence not to lose hope or resort to suicide but instead pursue justice and healing.
Breaking the Silence: A Call for Strength
Speaking at an Activism Ideation Meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, Uchenna Idoko, the Executive Director of CGE Africa, emphasized that sexual violence is not the end of life.
He encouraged victims to stay strong, seek justice, and not allow the trauma to define their future.
“Being a victim of sexual violence does not mean your life is over. You deserve justice, support, and a future filled with hope,” Idoko stated.
Advocating Through Art: Telling Stories Through Drama
As part of their efforts, CGE Africa is working on a theatrical play to shed light on the realities of sexual violence and promote awareness.
The initiative, titled “Gender-Responsive Budgeting for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Prevention and Mitigation,” is funded by the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF).
Idoko stressed that storytelling through drama would help change public perception, raise awareness, and push for policy reforms.
Justice for Survivors: Legal Experts Weigh In
Adding her voice to the cause, Barr. Ann Awah, former chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Cross River State chapter, highlighted the need for communities to break the culture of silence and actively support survivors.
“We need to bring to light what many victims endure. Through this play, we aim to give survivors a voice and ensure their pain is not ignored,” she said.
