A devastating boat accident in Warri South, Delta State, has left five people dead and 20 others missing, according to the Delta State Police Command.
Details of the Incident
The fatal collision occurred on Monday evening, involving boats carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony.
Reports indicate that poor visibility played a major role in the accident.
The state police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, confirmed that six survivors were found and rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Eyewitness Accounts
According to Emmanuel Okoro, a resident who witnessed the accident, the scene was chaotic:
“People were screaming for help. Some managed to swim to safety, but many others disappeared beneath the water.”
It was also observed that most of the passengers were not wearing life jackets, raising concerns about safety measures on local waterways.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Emergency responders and local volunteers are actively searching for the missing passengers, hoping to find more survivors.
Authorities continue to urge boat operators to enforce safety regulations, including the use of life jackets to prevent future tragedies.
