Jigawa State has once again proven its commitment to Nigeria’s agricultural revolution, leading the charge in food security with an impressive expansion of its wheat farming initiatives.
At the recently held Wheat Farmers Green Field Celebration in Dabi Village, stakeholders from across the country gathered to witness the state’s remarkable progress in boosting local food production.
The event showcased Jigawa’s success in large-scale wheat farming, a critical step in reducing Nigeria’s dependence on food imports and achieving self-sufficiency.
A Landmark Achievement in Wheat Production
In collaboration with the Flour Mills Association of Nigeria (FMAN) and the Jigawa State government, the Federal Government has successfully cultivated 80,000 hectares of wheat in the 2025 season.
This milestone follows consistent efforts to expand wheat production over the years.
Recalling past achievements, Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Abubakar Kyari, revealed that during the 2023/2024 wheat production season, the government supported the cultivation of 40,000 hectares in Jigawa, while the state and other partners contributed an additional 15,000 hectares, leading to a bumper harvest.
Building on this success, the Federal Government increased its support to 60,000 hectares for the 2024/2025 season, with state and private sector contributions pushing the total to 80,000 hectares—a massive leap forward for national food security.
Empowering Farmers with Essential Support
As part of its commitment to boosting agriculture, the Federal Government has donated:
- 10,000 water pump generators
- 10,000 sprayers
- 10,000 liters of insecticide, agro-fertilizer, and herbicides
These essential inputs, provided under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aim to enhance farming efficiency and productivity, ensuring long-term sustainability in food production.
Jigawa’s Bold Vision for Agricultural Expansion
Speaking at the event, Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to agriculture, describing it as the backbone of the state’s economy. He announced plans to further expand wheat farming to 500,000 hectares by 2030, positioning Jigawa as a leader in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
The governor also highlighted the state’s massive rice production achievements, with farmers cultivating over 1.6 million metric tons of rice in 2024.
Preparations for the 2025 dry season rice farming are already underway, with the state investing ₦8.2 billion as an advance payment to support 58,500 farmers in cultivating 50,000 hectares of rice.
A Model for Other States to Follow
Jigawa’s success in wheat and rice farming serves as an inspiration for other states, proving that strategic government interventions, strong partnerships, and farmer support can drive economic diversification and food sustainability.
