The Edo State Police Command has arrested a local vigilante member in Benin City for allegedly killing an artisan and setting his body on fire.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, officers from the Textile Mill Road Division responded to a distress call from concerned residents at around 8 AM on February 20, 2025.
Upon arrival, they discovered the burning body of a middle-aged man, identified as Lasan Osaze Erhabor, under a heap of sawdust.
“The Divisional Police Officer quickly mobilized his team to the scene, where they found the charred remains of the victim,” Yamu revealed.
Gunshot Wound Discovered on the Victim
The body was rushed to the hospital, but a closer examination revealed a gunshot wound on the victim’s back, indicating that he had been shot before his body was set ablaze.
Investigations led to the arrest of a vigilante security guard stationed at the sawmill where the incident occurred.
“The suspect is currently in our custody, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation,” Yamu added.
Police Vow to Deliver Justice
Authorities have assured the public that a full investigation will be conducted, and the suspect will be charged in court for murder upon conclusion of the probe.
This tragic incident has raised fresh concerns about security operatives’ conduct and the need for stricter oversight of local vigilante groups.
