Football pundit and former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, has found himself at the center of controversy after suggesting that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is not a major tournament.
His comments came while analyzing Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
Speaking on Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City, Carragher implied that Salah’s nationality and Egypt’s international record could hurt his chances of claiming football’s most prestigious individual award.
“I think the problem [is] the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such or maybe got a great chance of winning,” Carragher stated.
His remarks quickly sparked outrage, with fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards countering his statement.
“Just to say, AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying ‘they aren’t taking it seriously.’ AFCON is a big tournament, just so you know,” Richards responded.
Carragher, however, defended his stance, arguing that only global tournaments like the FIFA World Cup or UEFA Champions League truly influence Ballon d’Or voting.
Football Stars and Fans Defend AFCON
Richards was not alone in challenging Carragher’s comments. Former Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge also joined the debate.
“It’s a fact. If you win the Euros or Copa America, it’s considered a big deal. So AFCON should be at the same level,” Sturridge emphasized.
Richards further reminded Carragher of past AFCON battles, where Salah and Sadio Mané fought fiercely for the title, reinforcing the tournament’s importance.
Debate Over African Football’s Recognition
Carragher’s remarks have reignited long-standing criticism of European football’s tendency to downplay African competitions, despite AFCON being Africa’s most prestigious international tournament.
As Salah continues to dominate the Premier League, his performances could still put him in the running for the Ballon d’Or, regardless of Carragher’s skepticism.
With AFCON 2025 set to take center stage, discussions about its global standing are unlikely to fade anytime soon.
