Nigeria Unveils ‘Nutrition 774’ to Tackle Child Malnutrition
By NIGPOST

The Nigerian government has officially launched the ‘Nutrition 774’ Initiative, a nationwide program aimed at addressing the alarming rates of child malnutrition.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Vice President Kashim Shettima described malnutrition as a “national crisis” affecting children’s health, education, and future productivity.

Shettima highlighted worrying statistics:

  • 40% of children under five suffer from stunted growth
  • 8% experience wasting due to severe malnutrition
  • 37% are underweight, putting them at risk of serious health issues

He emphasized the urgency of tackling this crisis, stating that President Bola Tinubu has made the initiative a national priority.

A Nationwide Commitment to Nutrition

To ensure proper implementation, federal, state, and local government officials signed a compact pledging to:

✅ Improve coordination in nutrition programs

✅ Enhance accountability across all 774 local governments

✅ Mobilize resources for food fortification and maternal-child nutrition programs

Governors, ministers, and private sector leaders attended the event, underscoring broad support for the initiative.

The agreement is expected to drive impactful policies, community engagement, and better access to nutritious food across the country.

A Step Toward National Development

The launch took place ahead of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, where stakeholders are discussing economic policies and national development strategies.

Experts believe ‘Nutrition 774’ will play a vital role in securing Nigeria’s future by improving child health and boosting economic growth.

With targeted interventions such as food fortification, maternal nutrition programs, and improved food accessibility, Nigeria is taking a bold step toward eradicating child malnutrition and securing a healthier future for the next generation.
