A wave of unrest swept through Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, as irate youths set the divisional police station on fire.
The violent protest erupted after reports emerged that a young man had died in police custody following alleged brutal torture.
What Triggered the Unrest?
Although the exact cause of the crisis remains unclear, multiple sources claim that:
- A young man was arrested by the police after a reported altercation on Valentine’s Day.
- He and another suspect were allegedly tortured while in detention.
- By Saturday morning, one of the detainees had died, while the other was rushed to a hospital in a coma.
Protest Turns Violent
Outraged by the suspected police brutality, community youths stormed the Ifon Police Station, chased away officers, including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), and set the building on fire.
In a dramatic escalation, they also burned the house of the person who initially reported the arrested individuals to the police.
Police Attempt to Restore Order
On Sunday, a fresh wave of protests erupted, prompting security forces to intervene.
However, eyewitnesses report that police officers opened fire on the demonstrators, allegedly killing one protester.
Authorities Respond
Following the escalation of violence, Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olatokunbo Afolabi, visited the scene to restore order.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, have so far been unsuccessful.
