Brake Failure Causes Devastating Crash in Nnewi Community
A fatal accident occurred in Nnewi, Anambra State, as a cement-laden truck lost control and crashed into a residential building, leaving several people dead, including five members of a single family.
The tragic incident happened late on Friday, February 14, 2025, near the Nnewi Police Area Command Bus Stop.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck’s brakes failed, causing it to collide with multiple buildings before slamming into a home near the main road.
Eyewitness Accounts: Chaos and Tragedy
A resident described the terrifying moment:
“The crash was sudden and loud. People rushed out to see what had happened, and the scene was heartbreaking. Some victims were trapped under the truck, while others were thrown aside by the impact.”
Reports indicate that the driver of the truck did not survive, and many victims remained trapped under the wreckage as rescue efforts began.
“The truck cleared several structures before ramming into the house. Sadly, five children from the same family lost their lives,” another witness recounted.
Authorities Respond
A senior officer at the Nnewi Area Command confirmed the accident but stated that only the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) could officially provide details.
“Preliminary investigations suggest brake failure was the cause. A full inquiry is underway, and updates will be provided soon.”
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) also acknowledged the crash, with spokesperson Margaret Onabe confirming that officials were on the scene gathering more information.
Community in Mourning
The accident has left the Nnewi community in shock, especially as the crash happened while families were gathered for Valentine’s Day celebrations.
The mother of the deceased children was seen wailing at the scene as sympathizers tried to console her.
Authorities have urged motorists to ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent similar tragedies.
