Kenyan long-distance runner Edwin Koech emerged victorious in the men’s category of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday, securing the $50,000 grand prize. This marks his second win, following his 2023 triumph.
Koech completed the 42km race in a record 2 hours and 14 minutes, outpacing thousands of competitors.
The event saw an impressive turnout of 37,000 runners in both the 10km and 42km categories, underscoring the marathon’s growing prominence.
According to the General Manager of the race, Yusuf Ali, this figure was based on the number of running kits distributed, out of over 60,000 registered participants.
A Landmark Event in African Athletics
The 42km marathon kicked off at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, at 6:30 AM, while the 10km race began at Grace Garden Event Centre, Lekki, at 9:30 AM—both concluding at Eko Atlantic City.
Since its inception in 2016, the Lagos City Marathon has earned a World Athletics gold label. Organizers are now striving to achieve a platinum label, which would make it the first African marathon to attain such a prestigious status.
To facilitate a smooth event, the Lagos State Government implemented an eight-hour road closure on Friday, restricting traffic on key routes from 5 AM to 1 PM.
This year’s marathon further solidifies Lagos as a major hub for international athletics, bringing together elite runners and enthusiasts from across the globe.
