TikTok Restored on App Stores After Security Ban
The popular social media platform TikTok is once again available on Apple and Google app stores, ending a month-long removal triggered by a new U.S. security law.
AFP journalists confirmed the app’s return on Thursday.
The video-sharing app had been removed from stores on January 18 due to concerns that its Chinese ownership could allow the Chinese government to access user data or manipulate content.
However, its availability was restored following a 75-day pause on enforcing the law, ordered by newly re-elected U.S. President Donald Trump.
Why Was TikTok Banned?
The U.S. government, under former President Joe Biden, signed a law requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to either sell the app to an American company or face a nationwide ban.
The law was passed amid fears that China could use TikTok for spying or influencing public opinion.
Although TikTok disappeared from app stores, the service remained accessible to users who had already downloaded it.
The latest decision to allow TikTok back on stores comes as Trump explores potential solutions, including a joint U.S.-ByteDance venture.
Trump’s Changing Stance on TikTok
During his first term, Trump attempted to ban TikTok but failed due to legal challenges. Now, in his second term, he appears to have softened his stance, stating:
“With TikTok, I have the right to either sell it or close it. But I have a warm spot for the app.”
What’s Next for TikTok?
Although TikTok is back on app stores, the legal battle is far from over.
The law requiring ByteDance to sell its stake remains in effect, and companies that violate it could face fines of up to $5,000 per user.
Meanwhile, TikTok continues to face scrutiny worldwide, with governments in multiple countries expressing concerns about data privacy and security risks.
