Akwa Ibom Police Caught on Video Assaulting Pregnant Woman Over Insurance Dispute

Viral Video: Akwa Ibom Police Officers Assault Pregnant Woman Over Insurance Dispute

Public Outcry as Policemen Manhandle Expectant Mother

A disturbing video making rounds on social media has triggered outrage in Akwa Ibom State.

The footage, reportedly from the Itam Police Division, captures officers forcefully handling a pregnant woman over a third-party insurance policy enforcement.

Incident Sparks Social Media Backlash

The video, shared on Facebook by a user named Mayor Sylvester, shows the officers aggressively dragging the woman, who ultimately collapses. Expressing his frustration, Sylvester wrote:

“This is what the Itam Police Station in Akwa Ibom has turned the third-party insurance enforcement into. These officers are acting like animals! How can they treat a pregnant woman this way? I just hope her baby is safe.”

He further suggested a more humane approach, urging authorities to station insurance company representatives at police checkpoints for easy policy renewals rather than resorting to violent confrontations.

Police Authorities Remain Silent

Efforts to reach the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Bala Mohammed Azare, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Tifon John, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

Meanwhile, the distressing scene attracted a crowd of onlookers, with many questioning why the officers resorted to excessive force against a pregnant woman.

The incident has reignited debates on police conduct in Nigeria, especially regarding how officers enforce laws that directly impact citizens’ daily lives.

With the video gaining traction, human rights advocates are calling for an investigation into the officers’ actions. Many believe this case highlights the urgent need for police reforms in Nigeria.
