Police Launch Investigation into Mysterious Death of Inspector in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of Inspector Yusuf Suleiman Blessing, who was serving in Akotogbo, Irele Local Government Area of the state.

Inspector Blessing, a native of Ikoro-Ekiti in Ekiti State, was found dead under questionable circumstances on Monday, January 27, 2025.

According to his wife, she lost contact with him for over 24 hours before receiving a call from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who informed her that her husband had drowned.

However, when his body was brought home, the situation took a shocking turn. The three policemen who delivered his coffin allegedly fled when pressured to open it.

Upon inspection, his remains were found severely burned, with a cracked skull—contradicting the earlier claim that he had drowned.

Following public outcry and demands for justice, the Ondo State Police Command, through its spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed that a full autopsy had been ordered to determine the true cause of death.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, stated that while preliminary investigations suggested a case of “Sudden and Unnatural Death” with no foul play, the department would leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth.

Police reports indicate that on January 27, Inspector Blessing was last seen wearing a blue vest and green tracksuit trousers before he was reported missing.

Two days later, his body was discovered face down in a river, fully clothed, with no visible injuries except for swelling on his head. Initially, authorities ruled out arson or violence, but the family’s claims have prompted deeper scrutiny.

Despite initial resistance from the deceased’s family regarding an autopsy, the police have taken full responsibility for the process to ensure a transparent investigation.

The public awaits further findings as questions continue to rise over the circumstances of Inspector Blessing’s tragic death.
