Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to show mercy and release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Kalu made this appeal during a media briefing following the inaugural meeting of the House of Representatives’ South-East Development Commission (SEDC) committee at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
Political Solution Over Legal Battle
According to Kalu’s spokesperson, Udora Orizu, the deputy speaker praised Tinubu’s efforts in fostering peace and development in the South-East.
He highlighted Tinubu’s approval of the South-East Development Commission Bill, which had failed in previous legislative sessions, as proof of the president’s commitment to the region.
Kalu emphasized that resolving Kanu’s case through a political approach rather than a legal process would bring long-term peace and stability to the South-East.
“If President Tinubu facilitates Kanu’s release, insecurity in the region will decline, and development will flourish under the SEDC initiative,” Kalu stated.
The Impact of Kanu’s Release
Kalu further argued that some criminals use Kanu’s detention as an excuse to perpetuate violence in the region.
By securing his release, security agencies will have a clearer mandate to deal with those responsible for unrest.
He reiterated that President Tinubu remains a strong advocate for national unity and development, particularly in the South-East.
“All we need is government support to harness the region’s innovative potential in agriculture, technology, sports, and entertainment.
A thriving South-East will contribute significantly to Nigeria’s growth,” Kalu added.
A Call for Presidential Intervention
The deputy speaker concluded by urging Tinubu to consider a political resolution for Kanu’s release, assuring that it would enhance security and accelerate regional development.
“We are appealing to the President to temper justice with mercy. Releasing Nnamdi Kanu will restore confidence in the government’s commitment to peace and progress in the South-East,” he said.
