Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has emphasized the importance of a strong start for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The three-time African champions are drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. Speaking with ESPN, Yobo stressed that the first two games will be critical to the team’s success.
> “A good start is very important. The first two games are very, very crucial,” Yobo said.
He also highlighted Tunisia as a major threat in the group, stating that securing six points before facing them would be ideal.
> “The Tunisia game could be the one that decides the group winners. They are an experienced side and a frequent contender at AFCON.
We have played them many times, and they are familiar with us too. It’s going to be the biggest game in the group.”
Yobo also warned against underestimating Uganda and Tanzania, citing past tournaments where underdogs pulled off major upsets.
The Super Eagles will kick off their AFCON 2025 campaign against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars in Fez on Tuesday, December 23.
