The Rotary Club of Abuja-Aso Golf has extended a helping hand to indigent students by covering their WAEC and NECO fees at Model Secondary School (MSS) Maitama.
Additionally, the club has renovated the school’s signpost as part of its community development efforts.
₦647,000 Donated for 10 Students
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the club donated ₦647,000, ensuring 10 underprivileged students can sit for their WAEC and NECO exams without financial worries.
During the presentation, Lizzy Ulunma Asomugha, President of the club, emphasized that the initiative aligns with Rotary’s mission to support local communities, especially students facing economic hardships.
She noted that many of the students walk long distances from areas like Gishiri and Mpape to attend school, making their academic journey even more challenging.
Call for More Government Support
Asomugha, a former Nigerian female professional golfer and past Vice President of the African Women in Leadership Organization (AWLO), commended the FCT Minister for his efforts in renovating government schools but urged the federal government to increase its investment in education.
Students Urged to Stay Focused
Addressing the students, Asomugha encouraged them to remain dedicated to their studies, citing inspirational figures like Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Amina Mohammed, and Femi Adesina as role models.
Meanwhile, Rtn. Maureen Chukwurah, the Club’s Polio Chair, educated students on the importance of hygiene, emphasizing regular handwashing to prevent diseases.
Rtn. Chike Mbonu, D9127 Zonal Coordinator 2, highlighted that Rotary’s core principles focus on humanitarian service and educational empowerment, urging students to make the most of the opportunity.
Beneficiaries Express Gratitude
Dr. Judith Olure Irewole, Principal of MSS Maitama, expressed her gratitude, noting that many of the selected students were worried about meeting the exam registration deadline before the club stepped in.
One of the beneficiaries, Chigozie Nwoji, a science student, shared how his family struggled to raise funds before the January 31st deadline, describing the donation as a huge relief.
Another beneficiary, Abike Abdulsallam, an art student, prayed for divine blessings upon the donors, stressing that many students would have missed their exams without the club’s intervention.
A Call for More Philanthropy
Both students called on corporate organizations and well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the Rotary Club of Abuja-Aso Golf, emphasizing the life-changing impact of such initiatives.
The outreach team included several Rotary Club executives, such as Rtn. Emma Onyema (PE), Rtn. Emem Alban, Rtn. Ibe Onyebuchi, Rtn. Maureen Chukwurah, and Arc. Zulaiha, among others.
