India’s 76th Republic Day celebration in Lagos was a vibrant showcase of cultural heritage, unity, and diplomacy.
Held at the Indian Consulate, the event featured mesmerizing performances, colorful traditional displays, and an atmosphere of camaraderie among Indian nationals and Nigerian dignitaries.
The grand occasion drew an esteemed gathering, including business leaders, foreign diplomats, and high-ranking Nigerian officials.
Among them were the Executive Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, representatives of the Osun State governor, and the Deputy Governor of Lagos State.
A Celebration of Culture and Music
The festivities kicked off with a cocktail reception, allowing guests to mingle and network. Soon after, the audience was treated to a breathtaking series of traditional Indian dances performed by elegantly dressed young Indian girls.
Their graceful movements and intricate choreography captivated everyone present.
Just when the guests thought they had seen it all, a young performer named Aisha took the stage.
With a voice that echoed the soul of Indian patriotism, she sang a revered song originally performed by an Indian freedom fighter.
Her flawless rendition, infused with emotion and authenticity, earned her the affectionate title of “Black Indian” among the audience.
Many Indian attendees, familiar with the song, joined her in chorus, making it a powerful moment of shared cultural pride.
Strengthening India-Nigeria Ties
Beyond the cultural showcase, the event underscored the deep-rooted relationship between India and Nigeria. Attendees enjoyed an array of traditional Indian delicacies, further enriching the cultural experience.
In his opening address, the Indian Consul General, Chandramouli Kumar Kern, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from guests.
He emphasized that India’s Republic Day is not just a commemoration of its constitutional adoption but a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to global friendship and cooperation.
“As we celebrate our Republic Day, we reaffirm India’s identity as Vishwa Bandhu—a friend to the world.
This day marks the adoption of our constitution in 1950, a historic moment that reflects India’s democratic principles and vision for progress,” Kern stated.
India’s Growing Presence in Nigeria
The Consul General also highlighted the remarkable progress in India-Nigeria relations over the past year.
He referenced the historic state visit of Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to Nigeria in November 2024, which set the stage for expanded bilateral cooperation in technology, agriculture, fintech, defense, and renewable energy.
“India’s investments in Nigeria exceed $27 billion, with over 150 Indian companies operating across key sectors.
The synergy between Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Tinubu and India’s Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047 presents a roadmap for accelerated development,” he noted.
With India ranking as the world’s third-largest renewable energy producer, the country continues to make strides in sustainable technology, AI, robotics, and space exploration.
Kern emphasized that India’s advancements in these fields position it as a global innovation hub, strengthening its role in international partnerships.
Lagos State Pledges Continued Collaboration
Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Secretary to the Lagos State Government, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with India.
She praised the longstanding relationship between the Indian Consulate and Nigeria, which has been reinforced through diplomatic visits and collaborative projects over the years.
The Republic Day celebration in Lagos was more than just an event—it was a testament to the enduring friendship between India and Nigeria.
