Major opposition parties in Nigeria have strongly condemned former President Muhammadu Buhari for suggesting that only God can solve Nigeria’s problems, instead of acknowledging the failures of successive All Progressives Congress (APC)-led governments.
Buhari made the controversial remark during an APC stakeholders meeting in Katsina on Saturday, where he urged his supporters to remain hopeful, stating that “Only God who created Nigeria can solve the problems of Nigeria.”
His statement has sparked a range of reactions from Nigerians on social media.
Buhari’s Remarks Reflect APC’s Failures
Ladipo Johnson, the National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, described Buhari’s comments as a clear admission of the APC-led government’s failure.
He argued that Buhari’s statement revealed the administration’s lack of direction and inability to address the nation’s problems, likening it to a “trial-and-error” approach.
Johnson emphasized the need for new leadership, stating, “The APC has failed and cannot provide the leadership required to turn the fortunes of this country around.”
Buhari’s Comment a Critique of Tinubu’s Administration
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also echoed similar sentiments, with the Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, stating that Buhari’s words reflected poorly on President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He pointed out that while Buhari’s honesty about the state of the nation should be acknowledged, he failed to mention his role in setting the stage for the current government’s shortcomings.
Osadolor called for unity, urging Nigerians to rise above partisanship and work together to avoid further deterioration of the country’s situation.
Call for Youth-Led Change
Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, expressed little surprise at Buhari’s comments, noting that the former president’s lack of vision was evident throughout his tenure.
Ahanotu argued that it was time for Nigeria to embrace younger leaders capable of correcting the country’s past mistakes.
He added, “Until we include a younger generation of leaders, we cannot enjoy the dividends of democracy that are happening all around the world.”
As Nigeria grapples with leadership challenges, Buhari’s recent remarks have ignited a renewed debate on the direction of the country, calling attention to the need for effective and responsible leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people.
