Tragedy struck on Friday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as two separate accidents claimed the lives of two individuals and left four others injured.
The incidents occurred on the Long Bridge and Sagamu corridors of the busy expressway.
According to the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the first accident involved a Volkswagen bus with registration number LSR 793 YF carrying 14 passengers.
One of the bus’s front tyres burst while on the Long Bridge, causing the vehicle to lose control, crash into the road median, and somersault multiple times.
An unidentified female passenger died on the spot, while four others—three women and a man—suffered injuries and were rushed to A-Z Private Hospital in Magboro for urgent treatment.
Odutola noted that police officers from the Motor Traffic Division promptly arrived at the scene to manage traffic, document the crash, and clear the wreckage to avoid further accidents.
In a separate incident near the En-Salam Filling Station on the Sagamu corridor, a Volvo truck with registration number FZE 2350 G collided with a Cabstar pickup van with registration number AGL 904 AP.
The pickup driver, identified as Tope Kolawole from Owode-Egba, lost control of the vehicle, ramming into the truck.
Saka Alaigbade, a 42-year-old passenger, was trapped in the wreckage and later pronounced dead at Idera Private Hospital despite efforts by emergency responders.
The Cabstar van was severely mangled, highlighting the severity of the collision.
Both vehicles involved in the Sagamu crash were taken to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division for further investigation by the Vehicle Inspection Office.
These tragic incidents underscore the need for increased caution and vehicle maintenance on Nigerian roads to prevent further loss of life.
