The Struggles of Okuama Residents Post-Return
On January 1, 2025, the residents of Okuama in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, returned from the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp provided by the government.
However, what awaited them was far from the promised rehabilitation. With no homes, schools, or basic amenities, the community now struggles to rebuild their lives from scratch.
Broken Promises: Government Projects Left Incomplete
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who assured Okuama residents of swift rehabilitation, inaugurated a resettlement committee over eight months ago.
Despite promises of completing key projects such as schools, health centers, and town halls within three months, the site remains abandoned by contractors.
The once-vibrant community has been reduced to makeshift huts, with children out of school and families barely surviving.
The Dire State of Okuama: Voices of the People
Residents express their anguish:
“It’s tough. Our children have no schools; our homes are gone. We are starting over with nothing,” laments Aaron Ighorhiohwunu, a farmer.
Hon. Jacob Akemor, a former councilor, stated, “The community remains in ruins. Promises made were not kept, leaving us in despair.”
Women like Mrs. Queen Oghenehwosa have resorted to living in the bush, calling for immediate government action to rebuild the community.
Rebuilding Okuama
Community leaders and residents are now calling on the Delta State government, Urhobo leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene.
Former Commissioner Prof. Patrick Muoboghare emphasized, “It’s time for action. We must rebuild Okuama together.”
