Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann commended the bravery of the adult victim, saying, “He intervened selflessly to protect the children and paid the ultimate price for his courage.”

Suspect in Custody

The 28-year-old suspect, identified as a failed asylum-seeker from Afghanistan, was apprehended near the crime scene. Authorities revealed the man had a history of violent behavior and had been referred for psychiatric treatment on three previous occasions. Investigators are exploring a potential link to mental illness, as medications were found at his residence.

Chancellor Condemns the Attack

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz labeled the incident an “unbelievable act of terror” and questioned why the suspect, whose asylum application was denied in 2022, remained in the country.

“A false notion of tolerance must not compromise public safety,” Scholz remarked, demanding accountability from the authorities.

Renewed Debate Over Immigration

This tragic event has reignited heated discussions about immigration policies in Germany, especially with the upcoming general elections. Conservative and far-right leaders have called for stricter immigration controls and expedited deportations.

Conservative leader Friedrich Merz declared, “We must and will restore law and order,” while far-right AfD candidate Alice Weidel advocated for immediate deportations under the banner of “remigration.”

Survivors Recovering

Among the injured are a Syrian child with a knife wound to the neck and an adult undergoing treatment for multiple chest injuries. A kindergarten teacher also sustained injuries while fleeing the scene.

The attack underscores the need for heightened vigilance and reforms to ensure public safety.
