The Department of State Services (DSS) has leveled terrorism-related charges against Muhammad Mahdi Shehu, a self-proclaimed activist, before the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
The charges, filed on January 17, 2025, became public on Tuesday night, sparking widespread attention.
According to court filings, the DSS also obtained an ex parte motion to detain Shehu for 60 days, as permitted under Section 66 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The motion, approved by Justice Rilwan Aikawa, allows the DSS to conclude their investigation while Shehu remains in custody.
Charges Filed Against Mahdi Shehu
The DSS outlined a series of charges against Shehu, including:
1. False Publication to Cause Public Alarm:
Violation of Section 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act.
2. Dissemination of Terrorism-Related False Information:
Violation of Section 26(2)(a) and (b) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
3. Intentional Dissemination of False Information:
Violation of Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (as amended).
4. False Allegation of Treasonable Act:
Violation of Section 41 of the Criminal Code Act.
5. Use of Social Media to Support False Allegations of National Security Threat:
Violation of Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act.
The charges stem from allegations that Shehu shared doctored videos claiming the Nigerian government permitted France to establish a military base in northern Nigeria.
DSS Seeks to Address Misinformation
The DSS has emphasized the importance of tackling misinformation, especially when it poses risks to national security.
Authorities believe Shehu’s actions could incite public unrest and undermine Nigeria’s security efforts.
