The completion of a new 9-kilometer road has brought significant relief to over 70 communities in the Gwagwalada area of Abuja, making a huge difference for residents.
The road, part of the Paikon Kore-Ibwa road project, has drastically improved access in this part of the territory.
Prior to this development, the villages between Paikon Kore and Ibwa were isolated due to a dilapidated road and an outdated bridge, making it difficult for residents to travel or access vital services.
However, with the recent completion of the access road, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has brought much-needed change.
The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had officially launched the project in February 2024, emphasizing the importance of prompt delivery.
Since then, the road has transformed the daily lives of many, particularly the farmers in these communities.
Farmers now have easier access to markets across the FCT, helping to improve their livelihoods and boost agricultural trade.
Mr. Ibrahim Maikeri, the community liaison officer for the project, shared that over 70 communities along the road have already benefited from the new infrastructure.
“The Paikon Kore-Ibwa road had been in bad condition for over 50 years,” Maikeri explained.
“Before the reconstruction, it was difficult for farmers to move their goods. Now, thanks to the FCTA and Minister Wike, we can thrive again.”
The newly paved road not only facilitates the transportation of goods but also enhances interaction among the communities and helps reduce some of the security concerns previously faced.
In addition, the reconstruction of the bridge connecting the communities has made a world of difference, especially for students who now find it much easier to travel to neighboring villages for school.
His Royal Highness, Alhaji Muhammadu Magaji, the Aguma of Gwagwalada, expressed his gratitude, recognizing Minister Wike’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure across the Federal Capital Territory.
The Traditional Council of Chiefs, represented by Umar-Faruk Abubakar, echoed these sentiments, highlighting how much the community has gained from the project.
“Traveling to Ibwa used to be a major challenge, sometimes requiring a helicopter,” Abubakar said.
“Now, the journey from Paikon Kore to Ibwa only takes 10 to 15 minutes. We’re incredibly thankful for this change.”
Setraco Nigeria Ltd., the contractor behind the project, completed the construction two weeks ahead of the original deadline, much to the satisfaction of the FCTA.
Senior project manager Senaka Rupanetti credited the rapid progress to the cooperation of the community and the early funding provided by the minister.
“This was an urgent project, and thanks to the minister’s timely support, we were able to complete it ahead of schedule,” Rupanetti shared.
This road is more than just an infrastructure project—it represents hope, connection, and a brighter future for the people of Gwagwalada.
