Wike Urges Residents to Reject Underperforming Chairmen in Upcoming Elections
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has called on residents to vote out underperforming area council chairmen in the upcoming elections.
Speaking in a Sunday media chat with select journalists, Wike expressed his dissatisfaction with certain chairmen who have failed to meet their governance responsibilities.
He reminded the public that these chairmen were elected, not appointed, and must be held accountable for their campaign promises.
“If they promised the people during their campaigns, it is their responsibility to deliver,” Wike said, stressing that residents should not accept mediocrity from elected officials.
Wike also highlighted a concerning instance where a council chairman claimed he couldn’t afford to provide security vehicles for local law enforcement, despite rising allocations for councils.
Reflecting on his time as a council chairman in 1999, Wike expressed disbelief, saying, “When I was a council chairman, I provided police stations and vehicles for law enforcement. Why can’t today’s leaders do the same?”
He further criticized the chairmen’s leadership abilities, questioning their capacity to fulfill even basic duties, such as providing security vehicles. “If you cannot do this, what can you do?” he challenged.
In addition, Wike raised concerns about property owners neglecting to pay taxes, particularly ground rent, which he said hindered the implementation of large-scale projects.
“If people aren’t paying their dues, how can we undertake projects costing billions?” he questioned.
The Minister also discussed ongoing security initiatives in the FCT, including plans to establish a command control center to enhance security coordination and the acquisition of drones for surveillance.
Wike urged residents to be proactive in their voting choices, stressing that their votes directly impact the quality of governance in their councils.
“The time has come for the people to hold their leaders accountable,” he declared.
