Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo has announced transformative reforms to improve the state’s primary healthcare system, aiming to provide quality and accessible services to residents.
At a stakeholder engagement on primary healthcare revitalization held in Lokoja, the state capital, the governor, represented by Deputy Governor Joel Salifu, revealed plans to introduce periodic spot checks on Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state.
“This initiative, spearheaded by the Primary Healthcare Task Force in partnership with local government authorities and traditional rulers, aims to ensure accountability, improve coordination, and raise service standards across all PHCs,” he stated.
Commitment to Better Health Outcomes
Governor Ododo emphasized his administration’s dedication to enhancing healthcare delivery, particularly in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, expanding immunization coverage, and promoting primary healthcare’s pivotal role in the state’s health system.
“Our government is committed to resolving challenges in the primary healthcare sector to ensure better health outcomes. This includes strengthening data collection and adhering to global best practices in managing cases across PHCs,” he said.
Federal Support and Stakeholder Collaboration
The governor acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s support for healthcare reforms, noting that federal backing has been instrumental in driving progress.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, also stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to sustain healthcare initiatives. He disclosed that at least one PHC in each of Kogi’s 239 wards is operational and funded, with plans to further increase the number of fully functional centres statewide.
Traditional leaders, led by the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Ahmed Anaje, commended the health ministry’s efforts and pledged to monitor PHCs in their regions to uphold service quality.
These reforms signal a significant step toward transforming healthcare delivery in Kogi State, ensuring every resident has access to essential health services.
