The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, has lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for implementing an upward review of pensions in the state, a move that significantly improves retirees’ welfare.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan, union leaders Mr. Osuntade Ayoade (Chairman) and Dr. Olusegun Abatan (Secretary) expressed their gratitude to the governor for the revision.
“We are pleased to announce that the governor has approved a pension review, ensuring that the minimum pension is now ₦25,000,” the statement read.
Improved Pension for Retirees
Previously, the least paid pensioner in Oyo State earned a meager ₦1,000, making this increase a vital step toward enhancing the quality of life for retired workers.
The statement also highlighted that the review includes adjustments overdue since 2010, such as:
A 33% pension increase.
Consequential adjustments to pensions initiated in 2019.
A 20% pension increment across the board.
Implementation of a ₦32,000 pension increase.
The updated pension payments are set to take effect from January 2025.
