Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has authorized the release of 52 inmates from various correctional facilities in the state and reduced the sentences of six death row inmates to life imprisonment.
This decision followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
According to a statement issued by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), 35 of the inmates are to be released immediately, while the remaining 17 will serve an additional three to six months before regaining their freedom.
Pedro explained that the governor exercised his powers under Section 212 (1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to decongest correctional facilities in Lagos State, aligning with ongoing Justice Sector Reforms.
He added that the Advisory Council thoroughly evaluated the cases based on established criteria, including the offences committed, duration of incarceration, age, health conditions, behavior in custody, and recommendations from correctional facility officials.
“Before their release, the correctional centres must confirm that the necessary plans are in place for the rehabilitation and reintegration of these inmates into society,” Pedro stated.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also urged the released inmates to maintain exemplary conduct after their release and assured that the order would take effect following the completion of administrative procedures.
