Kwara State Partners with FG to Combat Illegal Mining – Commissioner

Kwara State Government has reiterated its commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to tackle illegal mining activities in the state.

This initiative was emphasized by the Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Abolore Alabi, during an inter-ministerial press briefing held on January 14, 2025, in Ilorin.

Strategic Plans to Combat Illegal Mining in 2025

Dr. Alabi shared the state’s strategic plans to combat illegal mining in 2025, highlighting the critical role of the Federal Government and security agencies in addressing this menace.

He stated, “The Federal Government and security agencies are key to curbing the illegal mining menace and ensuring the safety of all stakeholders involved.”

In a bid to strengthen the fight, the newly inaugurated local government chairmen are working hand-in-hand with the ministry to address illegal mining.

The chairmen are actively engaging with community associations to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal mining and promote lawful practices within the mining sector.

Summit to Discuss Solutions to Illegal Mining

As part of the efforts, a summit will soon be convened with traditional rulers and other key stakeholders in the mining industry.

This summit aims to brainstorm on sustainable solutions to combat illegal mining and ensure the sector’s development.

Dr. Alabi also emphasized that the government is working with the Federal Government to obtain mining licenses for operators under the state’s supervision, promoting legal and responsible mining practices.

“We are committed to ensuring that miners operate legally and responsibly to boost economic growth and protect our environment,” he remarked.

Vision for a Regulated and Sustainable Mining Sector

The administration is focused on harnessing the state’s mineral resources responsibly, ensuring the welfare of host communities, and promoting environmental sustainability.

Dr. Alabi added, “With these initiatives, the state government hopes to create a safer and more regulated mining sector that will significantly contribute to Kwara’s economic development.”

The Commissioner for Communications, Bola Olukoju, also highlighted the administration’s significant strides across various sectors.
