On Monday, January 14, 2025, the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan granted bail to Oriyomi Hamzat, the founder of Agidigbo FM, along with Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun.
The trio faced legal scrutiny following a tragic stampede during a children’s festive event in December 2024 at the Islamic High School, which resulted in the loss of 35 young lives. The court, presided over by Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin, granted each of them a N10 million bail with two sureties.
Addressing a crowd of supporters who gathered at his radio station after his release, an emotional Oriyomi Hamzat struggled to find words. Fighting back tears, he said, “Today is a day of silence for me. Thank you all, please return home.”
Court Bail Conditions
The defendants, including Hamzat, Silekunola, and Fasasi, were ordered to surrender their passports and were prohibited from granting media interviews.
They had previously argued their bail applications, and the court ruled on Monday in their favor, though the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has maintained that the trio must face trial for their alleged roles in the tragic incident.
