Traders and business owners in Kwara State have staged protests against a new government project that has blocked access to their shops and offices from major roads in Ilorin.
The demonstration follows the state government’s initiative, led by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, to fence off a significant road in the Post Office Challenge Area of Ilorin, the state capital.
The area, once a thriving commercial hub, has now become a barrier, disrupting the flow of foot traffic that local businesses depend on for sales.
Many traders have reported a sharp decline in their earnings, as customers can no longer access their stores due to the blocked road.
Business owners are voicing their frustrations, questioning the rationale behind the fencing project and its negative impact on their livelihoods.

Hundreds of traders took to the streets on Monday to demand the suspension of the fencing project.
They displayed placards expressing their anger, with messages such as: “Don’t kill us,” “Challenge is a central market, give us more entrances,” and “Single entrance can’t contain us.”
The protest has brought attention to the challenges faced by small businesses in the region, who fear that the project will cause further financial strain and potentially push them out of business.
