President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Dr. Segun Osoba, a distinguished historian and staunch advocate for social justice, as he marked his 90th birthday.
Tinubu described Dr. Osoba as one of Nigeria’s most brilliant minds and commended his remarkable contributions to the nation’s academic and constitutional development.
In a statement released on Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu lauded Dr. Osoba’s tireless efforts in promoting good governance and advancing knowledge.
The President highlighted his advocacy for constitutional reforms, social justice, and his role in inspiring generations of Nigerians through academia and activism.
“President Tinubu celebrates Dr. Segun Osoba on this momentous occasion, recognizing him as one of Nigeria’s finest intellectuals.
After years of distinguished service, Dr. Osoba retired from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 1991, where he made significant contributions as a history lecturer.
Since then, he has continued to impact society from his hometown, Ijebu-Ode, in Ogun State.”
Pioneering Role in Nigeria’s Constitutional Development
Tinubu also recalled Dr. Osoba’s pivotal role as a member of the committee that drafted the 1979 Constitution, which laid the groundwork for Nigeria’s Second Republic.
Alongside Dr. Yusuf Usman, Dr. Osoba authored a minority report advocating for the removal of immunity clauses for Presidents and governors and proposing a minimum age of 30 for political candidates.
“Although their report was rejected by the military government at the time, Dr. Osoba’s patriotism and vision for a better Nigeria remain a shining example,” Tinubu stated.
The President expressed deep gratitude for Dr. Osoba’s enduring patriotism and prayed for his continued good health.
“Dr. Osoba’s unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s progress is commendable, and we celebrate his life of service,” Tinubu added.
