Nigeria Prepares for Potential HMPV Outbreak, Assures Readiness

The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has assured the public of its readiness to tackle any potential outbreak of the Human Metapneumo Virus (HMPV), which is currently being monitored in China.

In a press statement released by the Director-General of NIMR, Prof. John Obafunwa, the institute affirmed its commitment to collaborating with government agencies to bolster Nigeria’s health emergency preparedness.

“Following recent reports on the Human Metapneumo Virus outbreak in China, we want to assure Nigerians that NIMR is fully prepared to fulfill its mandate.

We are in close contact with relevant agencies to ensure robust preparedness for any health emergencies,” the statement read.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that while the virus is circulating, no unusual outbreak patterns have been identified, and healthcare systems remain stable.

However, WHO recommends vigilance, particularly in countries experiencing winter, where respiratory infections often increase due to co-circulating pathogens like influenza, RSV, and HMPV.

To minimize risks, WHO advises the following precautions:

Seek medical attention for severe or complicated symptoms.

Wear masks in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces.

Practice frequent handwashing.

Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow.

Follow local public health guidelines for vaccinations.

HMPV, discovered in 2001, is part of the Pneumoviridae family alongside respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections, particularly among young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The Nigerian government, through agencies like NIMR and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), continues to issue health advisories and monitor the situation closely.
