Suspected Boko Haram militants launched a deadly attack in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, killing several firewood scavengers and leaving five others severely injured after they encountered Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) while resisting the attackers.
Gwoza, once declared a Boko Haram stronghold, has seen a resurgence of terrorist activities despite being liberated by military forces years ago. The recent assault occurred near the Yamtake-Izge-Damboa road, an area now marked by renewed violence.
According to local sources, the terrorists attacked the victims without resistance, leaving the community in mourning.
Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents the Southern Borno Senatorial District, recently expressed concerns over escalating attacks in his constituency.
These include incidents in Mandara Mountain, Damboa, and Biu’s Mandaga Girau, among others.
In a recent attack on Sabon Gari, six soldiers were killed, though 34 terrorists were reportedly neutralized by military forces.
Residents and relatives of the victims have called on the government and security agencies to address the deteriorating situation.
Some attributed the rising attacks to the absence of functional Tucano jets and military helicopters, which previously played a crucial role in countering insurgency.
> “We are mourning, and we appeal to the government to take swift action to protect lives and property,” a resident said anonymously.
Efforts to get a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Daso, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
The attack underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to restore peace and stability in the region.
