Gov. Diri: Transforming Yenagoa Into a Modern City

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Yenagoa, the state capital, into a modern city through its urban renewal program.

Diri highlighted this during a state executive council meeting in Yenagoa, following the relocation of inter-state commercial transporters to the newly constructed state-owned transport terminal at Igbogene.

The governor noted that centralizing motor parks is a hallmark of modern cities, a step Yenagoa is now embracing.

He emphasized that the new terminal will help curb criminal activities by enabling better monitoring of passengers entering the state.

> “I visited the new terminal, and its beauty reflects what every modern society does. For those criticizing our efforts, I’m sorry for them. Bayelsans, however, are proud of what we’ve achieved,” Diri stated.

He warned against touting at the terminal, urging all travelers to book and board vehicles within the facility.

Diri commended security agencies for ensuring a peaceful and crime-free festive season in the state.

He noted that the period witnessed a boost in tourism and entertainment, particularly praising Timaya’s annual concert on January 1, which attracted thousands of youths.

> “The Timaya Day concert showcased our youths’ discipline and the tourism potential of our state. There’s hope for Bayelsa and Nigeria if we all play our part,” Diri said.

While celebrating successes, the governor also addressed a tragic incident in Sagbama Local Government Area, where a community chief was murdered.

He praised local leaders for maintaining peace and assured the public that investigations would bring the culprits to justice.

Despite the governor’s optimism, reactions to the relocation of motor parks to Igbogene have been mixed. Some residents expressed concerns about the distance of the new terminal from Yenagoa’s city center.
