The long-awaited resumption of primary and secondary schools across Nigeria begins on Monday, January 6, 2025, following the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Parents, teachers, and pupils in states like Lagos, Delta, Kano, Jigawa, and Ogun have expressed excitement and anticipation as the second term of the 2024/2025 academic session kicks off.
In Kano State, boarding schools reopened on Sunday, January 5, while day students will resume on Monday.
The state government has issued strict directives for punctuality. A statement signed by the Director of Public Enlightenment, Balarabe Kiru, warned that disciplinary measures would be taken against latecomers.
Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Makoda, reiterated the state’s commitment to providing quality education and ensuring efficiency through monitoring exercises.
Similarly, Delta State has directed all public and private schools to resume on Monday. Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Augustine Oghoro, emphasized the importance of improving education standards.
Monitoring teams, led by Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, and her counterpart in Primary Education, will ensure full compliance. School heads were cautioned against absenteeism, with potential penalties for defaulters.
In Jigawa State, boarding students returned on Sunday, January 5, while day students will join on Monday. Commissioner for Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Professor Isa Chamo, assured parents that teaching materials are in place for effective learning.
The Federal Ministry of Education has postponed the resumption of unity schools to January 12 due to ongoing renovations. A circular signed by Permanent Secretary Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwazzo urged principals to prepare adequately for the new term.
Educators and school administrators are enthusiastic about welcoming students back. Lateefat Alli-Oluwafuyi, Head of School at Offsprings Ilorin, emphasized the importance of collaboration between parents and schools.
“We are excited to receive our students and encourage parents to stay actively involved in their children’s education,” she said.
However, parents have raised concerns about the rising cost of education.
A father of three, Mr. Tunbosun Esho, lamented, “The increasing prices of tuition and transport make preparation for a new term challenging.” Similarly, Mrs. Nafisat Bakare highlighted the burden of skyrocketing transport fares.
State governments have called on parents, teachers, and students to ensure a smooth transition into academic activities. With adequate preparations, they aim to foster an environment conducive to learning and growth.
