Troops Take Down IPOB/ESN Terrorists, Recover Weapons in Imo

In a significant development, troops from the 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, based in Obinze, Owerri, successfully neutralized terrorists and seized several weapons in Osina, located in the Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State.

According to Capt. Joseph Akubo, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the operation took place after the troops responded to a distress call on December 27, 2024, when members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), launched an attack on the Osina community.

While on their regular patrol, the troops encountered the terrorists and engaged them in a firefight. The terrorists, overpowered by the Nigerian Army’s superior firepower, retreated into nearby areas. Sadly, two security agents—who were not soldiers—lost their lives in the skirmish. Their bodies were recovered by the troops, who immediately continued their pursuit of the fleeing attackers.

The troops later came into contact with the remaining terrorists in Nkwachi community. In another intense exchange of gunfire, one terrorist was neutralized, while others fled into the surrounding forest. During this encounter, one AK-47 rifle, fully loaded, was recovered.

The troops continued their relentless pursuit into the Umalouma forest, where another intense firefight broke out. Faced with the superior firepower of the Nigerian Army, the terrorists abandoned their weapons and fled deeper into the forest, many suffering gunshot injuries.

In total, the troops recovered five AK-47 rifles, one Fabrique Nationale rifle, two magazines, and a tear gas launcher. Despite this success, Capt. Akubo emphasized that the operation is ongoing. The troops will continue their efforts to track down the wounded terrorists and dismantle their hideouts.

Akubo also urged residents of Imo State to support the military by providing information on the movements and hideouts of these terrorists. He assured the people that the Army would ensure a peaceful Yuletide season in the state, free from fear and violence.

The Nigerian Army remains committed to ridding the region of criminal elements and restoring peace to the affected communities.
