Chelsea Won’t Pursue Osimhen in January, Focus Shifts to Long-Term Strategy

In a surprising turn of events, Chelsea has decided not to pursue a move for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen in the upcoming January transfer window, despite earlier interest in the talented forward. Currently on loan at Galatasaray, Osimhen has been in sensational form, scoring 12 goals in just 15 appearances across all competitions, including two goals in Galatasaray’s impressive Europa League victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Osimhen’s move to Turkey followed a fallout with Napoli, his parent club, and Chelsea seemed to be an interested party, hoping to bring him to Stamford Bridge. However, according to reports from The Athletic, Chelsea has made it clear that they won’t be looking to bring Osimhen in January. Instead, the club has shifted its focus to a more strategic, long-term plan to bolster their attacking options.

This decision comes after Chelsea’s previous attempt to secure Osimhen on a season-long loan deal last summer, even suggesting a future obligation to buy. That move, however, failed to materialize, leaving Osimhen to continue his career in Turkey with Galatasaray.

While Chelsea’s attack already boasts a variety of talent—such as Jadon Sancho, Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke, Joao Felix, and Christopher Nkunku—the club is choosing not to rush into any short-term moves. Instead, they are keeping an eye on younger, promising talent for the future. Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is reportedly on their radar, and it’s believed that any moves to strengthen the attack will be reconsidered next summer.

Meanwhile, Chelsea may see a few players leave in January, with Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall among those potentially departing after struggling for regular playing time.

Chelsea’s season has seen its ups and downs, and after a disappointing 2-1 loss to Fulham on Boxing Day, the Blues will be hoping to bounce back as they close out 2024 with a final match against Ipswich Town on December 30.
