Renowned evangelist Isaac Omolehin recently made a powerful statement, addressing the troubling trend of pastors turning Christianity into a money-making venture. In the midst of Nigeria’s ongoing social and economic challenges, Omolehin, who has been preaching for over 50 years, also criticized the older generation for failing to properly guide and mentor the youth. His remarks came during a visit to the management of Graphic Newspapers as part of the activities marking his retirement from active ministry.
During his visit, Omolehin, the founder of The Word Commission International and The Word Assembly Churches in Ilorin, Kwara State, shared his thoughts on the moral decay he sees in the country. He pointed out that the rise of social evils is a direct result of the older generation’s failure to provide proper guidance to the youth. “The nation is struggling with so many problems because the elite have failed to lead the younger generation properly,” Omolehin explained.
He expressed deep concern about the breakdown of values in society, noting that institutions meant to shape the youth, like schools and religious organizations, have failed in their roles. This failure, he argued, has led to the high level of decadence seen today.
A Bold Critique of Church Leaders and Politicians: Omolehin didn’t hold back when speaking about some pastors and government officials. He accused certain men of God of using Christianity for personal financial gain, which, in his view, not only corrupts the faith but also sets a bad example for young people. “Some pastors have commercialized Christianity, turning it into a business, while politicians flaunt their ill-gotten wealth in the face of poverty,” he said.
According to Omolehin, this behavior sends the wrong message to the youth, who may be tempted to emulate these leaders’ selfishness and materialism. He called for a fundamental change in the way society operates. “We need to return to a just and fair society where values like integrity and service to others are at the forefront,” he stressed.
Reflections on Nigeria’s Potential: Omolehin also reflected on his early life in Kogi State, where he attended Government Secondary School in Dekina. He spoke fondly of the region’s rich natural resources, yet lamented that only a few, like Dangote, have been able to utilize them for the benefit of the people. “Kogi is blessed with resources, but only a few people benefit,” he said, urging the private sector to take a more active role in Nigeria’s development. He believes that if the private sector flourishes, so too will institutions like Graphic Newspapers.
Future Vision: Looking ahead, Omolehin shared exciting plans to leave a lasting legacy. He revealed that he had secured land in Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area, to build a polytechnic and Bible college. His vision is to create a place where young people can be educated not only academically but also in the values that will help shape them into responsible, morally upright citizens.
Acknowledging Omolehin’s Impact: Yusuf Jimoh Itopa, the Managing Director and CEO of Graphic Newspapers, commended Omolehin for his dedication to spreading the word of God for over five decades. He noted how Omolehin’s teachings had impacted many communities in Kogi State and urged the evangelist to continue his mission, even in retirement.
