A tragic accident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos early Monday, December 16, 2024, resulting in the death of one person and leaving five others injured. The incident took place at Ilubirin, heading towards Sura, around 6 a.m.
The collision involved a J5 Ford bus (with the registration number FKJ 724 YC) and a Mercedes truck (registration number FKJ 746 YC). Authorities reported that the J5 Ford bus, which was carrying perishable goods like pepper, experienced a brake failure while speeding, leading to the crash.
Responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), along with bystanders, arrived promptly at the scene to assist the victims. Four people were extricated from the wreckage, with three survivors rushed to the hospital. Sadly, one individual succumbed to their injuries.
The joint emergency response teams, including LASTMA, the Lagos Response Unit (LRU), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Police, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), worked together to manage the situation and transport the injured to the General Hospital on Lagos Island.
To prevent further traffic disruption, LASTMA’s team cleared the wreckage and removed the damaged vehicles and spilled goods from the scene.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased. He urged drivers, particularly those operating heavy-duty vehicles, to adhere to road safety regulations and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained, especially during the festive season.
LASTMA remains committed to ensuring safer roads and preventing accidents through collaboration with other relevant agencies. Drivers are reminded to avoid speeding and to regularly check their vehicles, especially the braking systems, before embarking on any journey.
