At least 39 people have been killed in two brutal attacks in western Niger, near the Burkina Faso border, as the region continues to suffer from jihadist violence. According to the Niger Ministry of Defense, the deadly attacks occurred between December 12 and 14, with both incidents targeting defenseless civilian communities.

The two attacks took place in the villages of Libiri and Kokorou, located in the Tera border region, an area heavily affected by insurgent activity. In the village of Libiri, 21 people, including children, were killed, while 18 others lost their lives in Kokorou. The defense ministry condemned these “barbaric acts” and attributed the assaults to criminals cornered by ongoing military operations in the area.

These attacks are part of a larger wave of violence in the tri-border region of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, a known stronghold for jihadist groups affiliated with both the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. These groups have been waging a relentless insurgency against local governments, leading to frequent attacks on civilians and military personnel alike.

In recent weeks, the region has seen multiple bloody assaults, including an attack on December 7, where gunmen killed 21 civilians in a goods convoy. This followed the tragic killing of 90 soldiers and over 40 civilians in the Tera region on December 3, though the Niger government has dismissed reports of the attack as “baseless” and part of a “campaign of intoxication.”

Despite the military government’s attempt to downplay these incidents, the rising death toll highlights the growing insecurity in the area. The escalating violence has led to increasing frustration and concern within the affected communities, as local residents continue to face the devastating consequences of the ongoing conflict.

The Nigerien government has yet to provide an official response to the latest attacks, while the military junta has faced increasing scrutiny for its handling of the security situation.
