Akure, the Ondo State capital, recently witnessed chaos as a group of commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, stormed the A Division police station in protest. The incident was triggered by the alleged shooting of one of their colleagues by a police officer.
The unrest began after a tragic accident at Arakale area, where a driver reportedly hit and killed an Okada rider along with his passenger. The accident sparked immediate outrage among fellow riders, who gathered to protest. During the commotion, a police officer attempted to disperse the crowd by firing warning shots. Unfortunately, one of the bullets struck another Okada rider, resulting in his death.
This act of perceived injustice fueled the riders’ anger, leading them to pursue the officer to the A Division police station. Upon arrival, they forced their way into the premises, hurling stones and vandalizing property. The situation became so tense that some officers fled by scaling the fence, while others moved their vehicles to avoid damage. Outside the station, the protesters lit bonfires and demanded the release of the officer involved.
The Ondo State Police Command, through its spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and assured the public that order had been restored. An investigation into the events was also launched to address the underlying issues.
This incident highlights the strained relationship between law enforcement and commercial motorcyclists in the region. It serves as a stark reminder of the need for better communication, trust, and reforms to prevent similar clashes in the future.
