A Lagos court is set to deliver a ruling on January 7, 2025, regarding the objection raised by former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, over fraud charges amounting to $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion.
Emefiele, alongside his co-defendant Henry Omoile, is facing 26 charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). During a hearing on December 12, Emefiele’s lawyer, Olalekan Ojo, argued that the court did not have jurisdiction to hear the case, claiming the alleged offenses occurred outside its authority.
Ojo further stated that the charges violated Nigeria’s constitution. On the other hand, EFCC’s lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, insisted the court had jurisdiction, pointing to the nature of the crimes and the evidence linking them to Lagos.
The judge will give a final decision on the matter on January 7.
