According to Professor Adele Jinadu, a renowned political science expert, the process of rigging Nigeria’s 2027 general elections has already started. Speaking at a policy dialogue on anti-corruption efforts in Abuja, Jinadu pointed out that political parties are now appointing party loyalists as commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He warned that this could undermine the integrity of the upcoming elections.
Jinadu emphasized that the political elite plans to manipulate the system through these appointments, ensuring they have people in positions of power who will follow their orders. He also mentioned the rampant practice of vote-buying, where party candidates spend large amounts of money, including foreign currencies, to secure party nominations. Instead of targeting the poor voters who are given small amounts of money to vote, he suggested that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should focus on party primaries.
The professor also discussed the ongoing battle against corruption in Nigeria. He criticized political interference, which has weakened the efforts of the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Offences Commission (ICPC). Jinadu highlighted that Nigeria has had multiple changes in the leadership of the EFCC since its creation in 2003, which has hindered the fight against corruption.
Furthermore, he expressed concern about how Nigeria’s political class often prioritizes personal gain over national progress. He urged for a return to morality in politics, stating that this is key to addressing the country’s corruption problem.
Jinadu also called for judicial reforms to strengthen the fight against corruption. He stressed that the legal system should be more accessible and focused on public interest to ensure fair and just outcomes for all citizens.
