In a distressing turn of events, the Okuama community in Delta State is mourning the death of its 81-year-old treasurer, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, who passed away in military detention. This tragedy comes just six days after the community’s President-General, Pa James Oghoroko, died under similar circumstances.
Both leaders were among several individuals arrested by the Nigerian military between August 18 and 20, 2024, following the March 14 incident where 17 soldiers were killed during a peace mission aimed at resolving a dispute between Okuama and the neighboring Okoloba community. The military’s response included a violent raid on Okuama, resulting in the destruction of the town and displacement of residents.
The deaths of Pa Oghoroko and Pa Okugbaye have sparked outrage within the community. Aggrieved youths and women have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and military authorities, demanding the release of all detained leaders and the return of Pa Oghoroko’s body. Protesters have expressed their frustration, stating, “After the seven days, this river will be blocked. Let the soldiers and Tinubu come and kill us so that we know Okuama is wiped out entirely.”
Human rights organizations have condemned the prolonged detention without trial and the alleged inhumane treatment of the detainees. Advocacy groups, including the Value Rebirth & Empower Initiative and the Ewu Clan Development Forum, have called for immediate and unconditional release of the remaining detained leaders and an investigation into the circumstances leading to the deaths.
The military has yet to comment on these incidents. As tensions escalate, the Okuama community continues to seek justice and accountability for the loss of its leaders and the hardships endured.
