Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central, has called for the inclusion of retired permanent secretaries (PS) in Nigeria’s policymaking processes. He made this appeal during the Annual Conference of the Association of Retired Permanent Secretaries (ARPS) held in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Mustapha emphasized that retired PS, with their wealth of experience and knowledge, should not be sidelined after retirement but should be incorporated into key decision-making roles. He noted that these retired officials, who had played critical roles in the administration of public services, possess valuable insights that can help shape effective policies.
The senator argued that the government can benefit from the wealth of knowledge accumulated by these retired senior civil servants, particularly in policy implementation and administrative efficiency. He suggested that their inclusion would help bridge the gap between policy formulation and its actual execution, which is often a challenge in the country’s governance system.
Mustapha further stressed that retirement should not be seen as the end of these experienced individuals’ service to the nation. Instead, it should be viewed as an opportunity for them to continue contributing to Nigeria’s development. He called for an approach that recognizes the expertise of retirees and ensures they play an active role in the country’s progress.
