After prolonged delays and unmet assurances, the Federal Government has initiated the disbursement of overdue entitlements to retired military personnel. These retirees had been awaiting a 20% to 28% salary increment covering the period from January to November 2024.
On Thursday, December 5, 2024, frustrated by the lack of action, the ex-servicemen staged a protest at the Ministry of Finance in Abuja. Equipped with chairs, canopies, and sleeping mats, they demonstrated their determination to secure immediate payment of their pensions and other outstanding benefits. Their demands included:
Overdue palliative payments from October 2023 to November 2024.
An additional N32,000 increase in their pensions.
Lump-sum payment of the Security Debarment Allowance.
Refund of pension deductions from the salaries of medically discharged soldiers.
Following the demonstration, reports indicate that some retirees have begun receiving their long-awaited benefits. Abiodun Durowaiye-Herbert, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Retired Members of Nigerian Armed Forces, confirmed the disbursements, noting that the planned protests were called off as a result.
Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, praised President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of both active and retired military personnel. He assured that the payment of pension arrears would continue to receive critical attention. Additionally, Matawalle announced the commencement of payments reflecting a three-month salary increase for military personnel, with recipients already receiving alerts confirming the disbursements.
The Federal Government’s prompt action in addressing the grievances of retired military personnel underscores its dedication to the welfare of those who have served the nation.
This development is expected to alleviate the financial hardships faced by the retirees and restore confidence in the government’s commitment to honoring its obligations.
